HCFC's are commonly accepted as having an overall detrimental effect on the environment through both their ozone depletion potential and global warming potential and consequently are being phased out completely. R123 is a single component HFC refrigerant as the refrigerant of choice for air conditioning systems and centrifugal chillers. Despite its very low GWP it is still a HCFC with an ozone depleting potential and is therefore being phased out in Australia.
the phase out was implemented in Australia under the Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Management Act 1989.
